Whittier ComicFest Interviews are Coming this Week!
The Master of Disguise is Here, and we don't mean Mike Myers
Hello, I’m Sarah Heck aka Sarah Bear Cosplay! I’m from Whittier, CA and I am a cosplayer and muralist.
I am a former professional artist with 15 years of experience in small and large-scale painting, prop building, and costuming. My artistic ventures began at Whittier High School where I earned two Journeyman awards as lead painter on various theatrical productions. I continued to hone my craft by starting an art commission business and attending Cal State Fullerton where I earned a degree in Studio Art. Since then, I have had wonderful opportunities to work with restaurants, schools, and private clients to create works of art they will enjoy for years to come.
The biggest obstacle I’ve faced has been putting myself out there. Being creative and artistic is one thing, but having the confidence to show your art, let alone wear it, has proven to be the greatest challenge. I’ve worked hard for years to build up my confidence in myself and my work, and am so proud of where I am today!
My favorite moments are always the grand reveal of my projects. They take months and months to work on, and getting people’s first reactions to my hard work is always a joy. It makes me feel like all the time, blood, sweat, and tears have been worth it.
Cosplay (and art in general) doesn’t have to be expensive, or cost much of anything! While some great cosplayers pay to have the most high-end wigs, costumes, and props, I always advise people to get creative and make stuff themselves. With a little elbow grease and some imagination, you can pretty much make whatever you want! Most of my projects are made from recycled materials, clothes or fabric I found around my house, thrifted items, etc. Art is not “pay to win” - use your imagination and work with what you have available to you. You’ll make some awesome stuff!
